Ik lees af en toe in het boek The writer’s guide to fantasy literature (ed. Philip Martin). Hier staan leuke, inspirerende, en handige (fantasy) schrijftips in. En, met de kick-off van NaNoWriMo in het verschiet, kan ik me maar beter goed inlezen!

De volgende schrijftip uit het boek vond ik heel treffend. Het laat zien dat personages écht moeten gaan leven, niet alleen voor jou maar ook ten opzichte van elkaar, en dat ze zich zeker niet zomaar om een plot heen laten buigen.

“In truth, the secret to all characterization for me is expressible in two maxims: Every character is the hero of his own story. And you don’t write characters, you write relationships.
In practice, the first maxim means that you must let the characters have their own purposes and agendas, not just do what the plot requires.
And the second maxim means that nobody is the same person to everyone - who they are depends in large part on whom they’re with.”
